A very simple definition: click some links (ads), earn money.
PTC sites are "make money online" programs.
A PTC can be considered as a low risk program because it is not required to invest. But if you are not careful you can lose, of course, lots of money.
Last months PTC sites became very disappointing. Lack of business plan, lack of initial capital are the main characteristics of new PTC sites. You have to be careful when joining and especially investing in a PTC. And I can not tell anymore "Site A is good to invest while Site B not." This is my opinion of course.
Pay to get paid PTC sites are scams.
PTC sites which are asking for personal information (ID, phone number etc) are scams too.
Creating an account in a PTC must be free.
Example was matrixptc, owned by a known scammer. You had to pay a $4 fee before registration.
Receiving payments, also must be free.
If a site that claims to be a PTC requires members to invest (or pay a fee first in site's AP account) in order to get paid, then it is a scam. Example was crewbux.com: Members had to invest minimum 50% of the next payout in order to get paid. Conclusion: Members who wanted to "see" their money, didn't have another option: They had to invest. Crewbux is now dead, what a surprise!
Offer Sites:
Free Offers Sites are very similar to PTC sites, however instead of clicking on links you sign up for free offers which don't cost you a penny. These offers are worth anywhere from $0.15 to $20.00 so it can be very profitable.
I will not go into great detail as it will just be a regurtitation of the above information.

Avoiding Scams
Of course, as you embark on the PTC adventure, you want to ensure that you do not get deeply involved in a scam. Many people have invested money in a site only to see it closed and their investment lost. No one wants this to happen to them. So, I want to tell you how to avoid this.
The best way to avoid this is to avoid spending any of your own money until you are 100% certain that the site is legit. If you join a new site that you are unsure of and it ends up closing, then all you will have lost is a little bit of time, as long as you did not invest your own money.
Here are some signs that the site is legitimate: prompt and helpful support, payouts within a reasonable amount of time, a distinct look (not a copycat of another site), and an admin that is recognizable and trusted.
In addition, you can also check with others in the PTC community. Keep in mind that sometimes, it is just a matter of opinion, and you will have some people claiming a site is a scam while others praise it.
